Workshop Details and Description:

Asynchronous Events

Prior to the scheduled synchronous events, attendees will complete a 10-hr On-Demand CEU training presented by Dr. Hanley on Practical Functional Assessment and Skill-Based Treatment OR a 12-hr On-Demand CEU Training on PFA-SBT for Implementors presented by Drs. Hanley, Ruppel, and Cammilleri at their convenience prior to the scheduled synchronous events. An email with instructions on how to access your on-demand content, including coupon codes, will be issued via email and according to the workshop’s schedule. The access period varies per course and begins from the date and time of code usage.

PFA-SBT (10 CEUs/10 hours): In this presentation, Dr. Hanley introduces the attendees to the latest iteration of the practical functional assessment process (PFA) that allows for the development of skill-based treatments (SBTs) capable of producing socially valid outcomes. Next an effective and parent-validated treatment process for problem behavior is described, with an emphasis on the generally applicable process for teaching contextually appropriate behavior following the shaping of a communication and toleration repertoire. The relevance of an “enhanced choice” model for minimizing risks and expanding practitioner’s scope of practice, and the logistics of implementing the assessment and treatment processes under various practice constraints and resources are also discussed.

A Training on PFA-SBT for Implementors (10 CEUs/12 hours): The roles of implementors in functional assessment and treatment processes vary widely. In this training, implementors will gain a clear understanding of the values and priorities underlying the Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) processes, as well as their multiple roles in these processes. Through a combination of lectures, active responding, video models, and computer-based differential feedback, they will learn how to talk about and implement the PFA and SBT processes with diverse client populations. Implementors will learn specific skills such as setting up analyses, collecting and graphing data, how to bring the joy, progress an establishing operation, prompt a skill, differentially reinforce, respond to both mild and severe forms of problem behavior, and extend the skills to new evocative situations. They will also learn the more general skills of supporting and responding to parents and becoming an effective supervisee.

Attendees will also complete a recorded 2-hr On Demand CEU of the follow-up Q&A session at their convenience. An email with instructions on how to access your on-demand content, including coupon codes, will be issued via email and according to the workshop’s schedule. The access period varies per course and begins from the date and time of code usage.

Commonly Asked Questions about the PFA-SBT Process (2 CEUs): This complementary Q&A session will include answers to questions that were raised during Dr. Hanley’s presentation as well as additional questions about this process that are often asked of our consultants.

Following successful participation in the scheduled synchronous events, attendees will complete a 1-hr On-Demand CEU training presented by Dr. Hanley on Tips for Expediting the Skill-Based Treatment Process at their convenience. An email with instructions on how to access your on-demand content, including coupon codes, will be issued via email and according to the workshop’s schedule. The access period begins from the date and time of code usage.

In this course, Dr. Hanley presents  tips for expediting the SBT process and discusses how to achieve socially meaningful outcomes faster. Knowing how to uphold the core values of safety, rapport, and televisibility while progressing expeditiously through SBT is important because slow processes are simply less reinforcing for the student or client, sometimes insufficiently reinforcing for the implementor, and sometimes excruciating for the parent or school-based colleagues who are wondering why the child always seems to be in that “damn” context in which they are simply getting their way!

Attendees will also complete 1-hr advance On-Demand CEU course from the following list:

  1. Advancing the Complexity of Communication During FCT
  2. Beyond FCT: Avoiding Delay-Induced Resurgence of Problem Behavior
  3. Skill-Based Treatment Extension: Generalization and Maintenance
  4. Prompting, Shaping, and Differential Reinforcement

Synchronous Events

Part 1: FTF’s Introductory PFA-SBT Design Session

Planning for the IISCA and initial steps of SBT (i.e., up to CAB2)

Description:

These sessions are for professionals who have already completed the 10-hr On-Demand CEU training presented by Dr. Hanley on PFA-SBT OR the 12-hr On-Demand CEU Training on PFA-SBT for Implementors presented by Drs. Hanley, Ruppel, and Cammilleri and are ready to design a PFA and SBT plan for a client in their care.

These sessions will be conducted via zoom in small groups with an FTF Senior or Lead Consultant. This is an additional capacity-building opportunity with one of our skilled consultants who will model backward designing the analysis informed by the terminal goals of treatment for a client in your care. Attendees will learn to:

  1. Extract unique synthesized reinforcement contingencies from interviews
  2. Design safe and effective functional analyses from the interviews
  3. Design the initial steps of a skill-based treatment (i.e., up to CAB2) based on the analysis and the terminal goals of treatment for a client
  4. Revise analysis and treatment steps based on client performance

The focus of these sessions will be on the foundations of identifying individualized reinforcement and evocative contexts for a learner. While individual questions and problem-solving is encouraged, unique cases may be better addressed via an individualized consultation. Attendees will be provided with updated implementation support materials. Successful completion of the Introductory PFA-SBT Design Session will yield 4 BACB CEUs (General).

Pre-requisites & Requirements:

  • Completed FTF’s 10-hr On-Demand CEU training presented by Dr. Hanley on PFA-SBT OR the 12-hr On-Demand CEU Training on PFA-SBT for Implementors presented by Drs. Hanley, Ruppel, and Cammilleri
  • Completed an open-ended interview for one client.
  • Group sharing of PFA-SBT workbook via Zoom Group Chat

Agenda:

10:00 – 11:00 AM EST:  Consultant reviews an example with design tips.

11:00 -11:30 AM EST:  Attendees work individually on PFA-SBT workbook to design analysis and initial steps of SBT

11:30 – 12:00 PM EST: Attendees join zoom breakout rooms with other attendees to review completed workbook.
