The Skill-Based Treatment for Severe Problem Behavior begins by building the skills of communication, toleration, and cooperation in dedicated treatment sessions targeting evocative contexts that are challenging for the learner and convenient to recreate. The evocative context (“EO condition”) and reinforcement condition are clearly delineated, with reinforcers delivered continuously during the reinforcement interval. Implementers and treatment settings are carefully selected and limited in number during early stages of treatment. These procedures are critical early in the Skill-Based Treatment process, and extensions are recommended only after a robust skill repertoire has been established.
Some learners generalize skills to new contexts easily, while others require explicit and systematic support to demonstrate skills across contexts, implementers, and settings. Teams should intentionally plan and implement these extensions over longer periods of time, including extending toleration skills into the reinforcement interval, until skills occur reliably across all relevant contexts. Ongoing consideration must also be given to maintaining skills across contexts.
This course addresses key considerations for treatment extensions, including teaching tolerance for limitations within the reinforcement context (“gray reinforcement”). Well-developed extension plans support effective and efficient treatment and help professionals clearly communicate the treatment process to stakeholders.

This course is designed for those who have completed the 10-CEU PFA/SBT course and are interested in learning about extending treatment beyond the initial CAB branches.

Attendees will be able to describe backward design; the treatment extension rule of thumb; considerations for ordering treatment extensions; how to target specific requests within Skill-Based Treatment; how to target tolerance for incomplete reinforcement conditions (“gray reinforcement”); how to extend treatment to additional implementers and settings; how to extend treatment over longer periods of time; and how to maintain skills.
This course includes four chapters, each containing a video and a quiz. If you close your browser before finishing a video, your progress will not be saved; it is recommended that you note the timestamp before exiting. Check spelling carefully when completing constructed-response items. A score of 100% is required to pass each quiz. Upon successful completion, learners will receive a certificate of completion for 1 BACB General Learning-Type CEU and access to a feedback survey. Learners are encouraged to review the “Download Materials” section before beginning the first chapter.
