Note:

This course is designed for those who have completed the 10-CEU PFA/SBT course and are interested in learning about extending treatment beyond the initial CAB branches.

Abstract:

The Skill-Based Treatment for Severe Problem Behavior begins by building the skills of communication, toleration, and cooperation in dedicated treatment sessions targeting evocative contexts that are challenging for the learner and convenient to recreate. The evocative context (“EO condition”) and reinforcement condition are very clearly delineated, and efforts are made to provide all reinforcers continuously during the reinforcement interval. Implementer(s) and treatment setting(s) are carefully selected and limited in number. These measures are quite important early in the Skill-Based Treatment process, and it is only when a robust repertoire of skills has been built that we recommend extending to additional contexts.

Some learners transfer their skills to new contexts relatively easily, whereas other learners need more support to demonstrate the skills in all the contexts in which they are needed. Teams should plan to explicitly and systematically extend skills to additional contexts, implementers, and settings, over longer time periods—and even to extend the toleration skills into the reinforcement interval– until such systematic work is no longer needed. That is, until skills are occurring in all the relevant contexts. Consideration also needs to be given to maintaining the skills across contexts.

In this course, attendees will learn about considerations for the above-noted extensions, including teaching learners to tolerate limitations to the reinforcement context (“gray reinforcement”). Well-articulated extension plans not only guide effective and efficient treatment, but they also help professionals convey a complete understanding of the process to stakeholders.

Objectives: Attendees will be able to describe

  1. Backward design
  2. The treatment extension rule of thumb
  3. Considerations for ordering treatment extensions
  4. How to target specific requests within SBT
  5. How to target tolerance for an incomplete reinforcement condition (“gray reinforcement”)
  6. How to target extension to additional implementers and settings
  7. How to extend over longer periods of time
  8. How to maintain skills

Tips:

  1. This course has 4 chapters that contain a video and a quiz.
  2. If you close your browser before finishing a video, your place in the video will not be saved. Therefore, we recommend that you jot down the timestamp before closing your browser so you can quickly find the spot at which you left off when you return.
  3. Be sure to check your spelling when composing constructed answers.
  4. 100% correct responding is required to pass the quiz.
  5. When you successfully complete the quiz, you will be presented with a certificate of completion worth 1 BACB General Learning-Type CEUs, and a link to a feedback survey.
  6. Be sure to check out the “Download Materials” section before the first chapter for helpful resources.
