Kara Coble, a dedicated BCBA and LBA, implements PFA-SBT within the Nebraska Autism Spectrum Disorder Network. Her journey with PFA-SBT began in the fall of 2021 when she read Dr. Hanley’s Perspective on Today’s ABA. The article resonated with her, reinforcing the values-driven approach she had already been using with learners and shaping her future practice. Reflecting on this experience, Kara notes, “I felt validated in the practice that I had been engaging in as a school-based BCBA, and it simultaneously changed my future practice.” She completed an on-demand training in PFA-SBT in December 2021, quickly embracing the methodology. Kara earned her Level 4 Lead Implementation PFA-SBT Credential in 2022, followed by her Level 6 Supervision PFA-SBT Credential in 2023.
As a Behavior Specialist with the Nebraska ASD Network, Kara consults with school teams to implement PFA-SBT and Balance. These programs, working together, have created meaningful change in the schools she supports. Kara reflects on their impact: “Seeing the difference PFA-SBT and Balance have made in the lives of students, their families, and the educators has made this one of the most worthwhile journeys I’ve been on.” One of her most memorable cases involves a teenage learner, initially engaging in severe behaviors, who is now thriving in community and school activities, even holding jobs. Kara shares, “My heart swells knowing that three years later, this learner continues to engage and participate in an abundance of school and community activities.”
Kara’s work is characterized by a collaborative and supportive approach. She fosters an environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth, saying, “I love working with teams to implement PFA-SBT in their schools. Each team is unique, and that has enriched my experience.” Working with rural school districts, Kara tailors her approach to meet the specific needs of each team, ensuring lasting success. She also collaborates closely with administrators to support interdisciplinary teams and provide ongoing staff development.
Looking ahead, Kara is committed to expanding the reach of PFA-SBT and Balance throughout Nebraska. She continues to refine her work with school teams while exploring ways to apply PFA-SBT principles in skill acquisition for learners without severe problem behavior. Her advice to those new to PFA-SBT is simple: “Trust the process. It is hard work and can be overwhelming in the beginning. However, as the pieces come together and you see the shift begin to happen, it is an amazing thing.”
Thank you, Kara, for your dedication to students and your collaborative support of school teams. Your work continues to make a lasting impact.
