Residential & Community-Based Programs

Behavioral Consulting for Residential and Community-Based Programs

Residential and community programs are faced with some of the most complex and high-risk behavioral presentations in the field, with the added challenge of large personnel teams across multiple shifts. FTF provides training in Practical Functional Assessment, Skill-Based Treatment, and Universal Protocols, empowering staff members on every shift.

FTF Behavioral Consulting's training and consultation process extends to localized settings and programs.

  • Residential Schools
  • Group Homes
  • Crisis Stabilization Programs
  • Community-Based Human Service Agencies

Depending on a scope of the program and the resources available, these types of organizations may choose training in PFA-SBT, Universal Protocols, or both. Universal Protocols are a set of strategies to improve client-staff rapport, minimize behavioral escalations, and keep everyone safe.

Preventing behavioral crisis in a round-the-clock staffing environment requires structured, consistent practice across shifts. The Universal Protocols are a set of ABA strategies that you do not need to be a behavior analyst to implement.

What Is PFA-SBT for Residential and Community Settings?

In addition to Universal Protocols, some residential and community organizations train personnel to implement Practical Functional Assessment and Skill-Based Treatment (PFA-SBT). PFA-SBT starts with an individualized functional assessment: identifying the specific triggers and reinforcers behind a client's problem behavior, then building a skill-based treatment plan around functional replacement skills. FTF trains program leaders and clinicians to conduct that process, sometimes with the support of a direct care staff member. As the client learns skills, these skills are then generalized to new settings, caregivers, and contexts, so that eventually the client uses the new skills with all staff members. Residential program leaders are responsible for staff who are often on the front line of supporting individuals with complex behavioral needs, and PFA-SBT and Universal Protocols give that staff a consistent, repeatable standard of care to work from.

Consistency Across Shifts Matters

Whether you're leading a crisis stabilization program or teaching in a residential school, the same client may be supported by a different combination of staff every shift. Without a common foundation from which to provide services, clients may experience a confusing range of expectations and contingencies. Universal Protocols give every shift the same starting point, so the routine, the language, and the expectations stay the same no matter who clocked in.

The path from training a small group of staff to embedding an approach agency-wide isn't easy. We can help ABA clinics, group homes, and crisis stabilization programs integrate our specialty approaches into their organization's framework. Whether or not your organization provides ABA therapy, we can help improve rapport, safety, and joy for clients and staff members.

1 Direct Care Staff Training

We have experience training direct care staff to implement Universal Protocols and PFA-SBT. Our consultees tell us that our real-time coaching, as they are working with clients, is a game changer. With an FTF Consultant in their ear via earbud, implementers practice with the support they need to succeed. The goal is a durable, independent skillset that staff can use with a variety of clients in relevant settings.

2 Agency-Wide and Multi-Site Rollout

FTF's structured training process can be implemented in crisis stabilization programs, residential schools, and other facilities in need of support. Our Train-the-Trainer model helps scale up support across sites.

3 Training Formats (In-Person, Virtual, Ongoing Consultation)

FTF provides ABA training in multiple formats to make it feasible for everyone. We work with your schedule to provide the foundational training regarding PFA-SBT and Universal Protocols procedures. Our support will continue through the implementation stage, including ongoing, weekly Zoom meetings to support staff members' learning.

Great outcomes are team outcomes. With FTF, direct care staff gain the confidence to prevent behavioral escalations and increase joy, which means fewer crisis events and fewer restraints or emergency interventions overall. Clients experience responsive care in an engaging environment, and day-to-day outcomes improve because the practice is grounded in the science of applied behavior analysis.

Share information about your crisis stabilization or residential program's current population and staffing structure. FTF's ABA consulting will help you shift your culture to one of more joy, more connection, and less crisis.
