Clinical & ABA Settings

Behavioral Consulting for ABA Clinics and Clinical Settings

Assessing and treating problem behavior in a clinical setting is rarely straightforward. Teams may support individuals with emerging problem behavior, severe problem behavior, or highly complex needs, often while coordinating care across clinicians, caregivers, and disciplines.

Practical Functional Assessment and Skill-Based Treatment (PFA-SBT) provides clinicians with a systematic and individualized approach to understanding problem behavior and teaching meaningful skills.

FTF Behavioral Consulting helps ABA clinics, autism centers, behavioral health programs, and multidisciplinary teams develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to implement PFA-SBT safely, effectively, and with confidence.

FTF Behavioral Consulting provides training and consultation for practitioners working across a range of clinical settings, including:

Although every setting and client is different, clinical teams often face a similar challenge: developing a shared, individualized, and practical process for responding to problem behavior across people and disciplines.

Clinical teams in an early intervention program may encounter a wide range of behavioral complexity, from emerging problem behaviors to severe problem behaviors requiring intensive and carefully coordinated support.

PFA-SBT gives multidisciplinary teams a systematic process for individualizing the assessment and treatment to the needs, circumstances, and priorities of each person. Rather than relying on a generic protocol, teams learn to develop a personalized understanding of problem behavior and use that understanding to design meaningful treatment.

1 What Is PFA-SBT for Clinical Teams?

Practical Functional Assessment and Skill-Based Treatment (PFA-SBT) starts with an interview-informed assessment process designed to understand the circumstances in which problem behavior occurs and the outcomes that may be influencing it. This information is used to design a personalized analysis that prioritizes safety, dignity, and a meaningful understanding of the individual's behavior.

From there, the clinical team builds a skill-based treatment plan that teaches the client important communication, toleration, and cooperation skills. Treatment is progressively shaped around the individual so that these new skills become increasingly effective and useful in everyday situations, reducing the need to engage in problem behavior.

FTF trains clinical teams to implement this process with increasing independence, whether they are addressing emerging behavior or severe problem behavior. The goal is for PFA-SBT to become a sustainable and repeatable part of clinical practice.

2 Creating Alignment Across Clinical Teams

Professionals (i.e., BCBAs, psychiatrists, nursing teams, speech and language pathologists) from different disciplines bring valuable perspectives to complex cases, but differences in terminology, priorities, and clinical practices can sometimes make coordinated care challenging. PFA-SBT gives every discipline a shared starting point: an individualized assessment, a common understanding of the contingencies influencing behavior, and a coordinated treatment plan that team members understand and can support.

This alignment can improve communication, strengthen collaborative problem-solving, and help an organization provide greater consistency across clinicians, disciplines, and settings while continuing to individualize care for each client.

FTF provides targeted ABA training and ABA consulting for autism treatment centers, clinics, and agencies. We help organizations develop a clear path toward a consistent, systems-level approach to assessing and treating problem behavior, from building the competency of individual clinicians to supporting implementation across an entire agency or multidisciplinary program.

1 Individual Clinician Training

We start with the individual clinician: supporting them in designing and conducting individualized assessments, modeling relevant PFA-SBT practices, and coaching them as they implement assessment and treatment with the clients they serve.

Training is built around your clinic's existing caseload, so clinicians are applying PFA-SBT to the clients already in front of them, not only discussing hypothetical scenarios. From there, clinicians build the skills to independently design and implement practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment across a range of clinical needs and levels of behavioral complexity.

2 Agency-Wide and Multidisciplinary Rollout

FTF provides a structured approach for rolling out PFA-SBT across clinical teams and programs. Consultation may include developing internal implementation expectations, aligning staff training and performance supports, strengthening interdisciplinary communication, and identifying the systems needed to sustain high-quality practice over time.

The goal is not to make every case look the same. It is to help teams use a shared process while continuing to individualize assessment and treatment for each client.

3 Education, Guided Implementation, and Ongoing Support

FTF's training follows a three-step model designed to move clinicians from learning about PFA-SBT to implementing it effectively in practice.

Education comes first: on-demand courses and in-person or virtual workshops build practitioners' working knowledge of PFA-SBT concepts and procedures.

Guided Implementation follows: practitioners design the assessment in collaboration with FTF and then receive live coaching—either in person or via Zoom—as they implement it with clients. Once the assessment has informed an understanding of the contingencies influencing problem behavior, the collaborative design-and-coaching process continues through the development and implementation of treatment.

Ongoing Support continues after that: regular Zoom consultations provide opportunities to review progress, examine data, address barriers, and guide treatment decisions. When appropriate, consultation may also include asynchronous review of submitted videos and clinical materials.

When teams share a common understanding of the practical functional assessment and treatment process, they can communicate more clearly, make treatment decisions more collaboratively, and respond more consistently across people and settings.

For clients and families, this means receiving support that is individualized, skill-focused, and designed around meaningful improvements in everyday life. For clinicians working in an ABA clinic, it means having a practical process for navigating complex cases and making informed treatment decisions.

PFA-SBT can help create the conditions for effective in-clinic ABA therapy by giving team members a shared understanding of the client's behavior, the skills being taught, and how treatment should progress. Through ongoing ABA consulting, an FTF behavioral consultant remains available to help teams review progress, address barriers, and problem-solve as new or complex clinical needs arise.

Share your agency's current needs, clinical settings, and team structure. An FTF behavioral consultant can help you explore what PFA-SBT training and implementation could look like for your organization, whether you are supporting a single ABA clinic or coordinating care across a multidisciplinary agency.

FTF's approach is grounded in applied behavior analysis and informed by extensive experience helping clinical teams translate PFA-SBT principles into compassionate, effective, and sustainable practice.
