Overview

This course is in Beta testing. Please email ondemand@ftfbc.com with any technical inquiries/concerns.

The Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) processes continue to evolve through research and practice. In this comprehensive course, attendees will learn about these compassionate and effective processes, as well as the underlying values and priorities.
This updated 2025 version integrates material from our previous “PFA-SBT for Implementors” course with new modules so that attendees learn about the most up-to-date version of PFA-SBT. New modules address topics such as:

  • Decision-making about boundaries in the reinforcement context
  • How to place those boundaries safely
  • The role of modeling (showing the contingency) and multimodal responses in Functional Communication Training
  • Updated strategies for expediting progress in SBT
  • Data collection and graphing using the most up-to-date SBT forms and templates
  • Fostering meaningful collaboration with stakeholders (the “buy in” question)

The course includes lectures, video models, active response opportunities, and computer-based feedback. The course also features updated downloadable materials, including new data collection and graphing templates, a brief implementation integrity checklist, and the most up-to-date workbooks.

Tips
  1. This course is divided into 15 chapters.
  2. Each chapter presents a video.
  3. If you close your browser before finishing a video, your place in the video will not be saved. Therefore, we recommend that you jot down the timestamp before closing your browser so you can quickly find the spot at which you left off when you return.
  4. After most videos there will be a short quiz.
  5. Many of the quiz questions are in the style of “multiple selection.” That is, there will often be more than one correct answer.
  6. Be sure to check your spelling when composing constructed answers.
  7. 100% correct responding is required before moving to the next chapter.
  8. When all quizzes are successfully completed, you will be presented with a certificate of completion worth 10 BACB learning-type CEUs (9 General, 1 Ethics) and a link to a feedback survey.
  9. Be sure to check out the “Download Materials” section before the first chapter. It is full of helpful resources for learning and implementing the PFA/SBT process.

Dr. Hanley has been applying the principles of learning to improve socially important behaviors of children and adults with and without disabilities for 35 years. He initially worked in direct care and residential manager roles (90-94), then trained at the Kennedy Krieger Institute (94-97), earned his doctoral degree from the University of Florida (2001), was tenured at the University of Kansas (2006), and directed the Behavior Analysis Doctoral Program and Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University (2007-2019). Dr. Hanley has published over 100 book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals in areas such as the assessment, treatment, and prevention of problem behavior, skill development, and evidence-based values. Dr. Hanley is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Div. 25) and of the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), past Associate Editor of The Behavior Analyst, and past Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and of Behavior Analysis in Practice. Dr. Kelsey Ruppel, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA

Dr. Ruppel’s work focuses on the practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment of problem behavior, as well as preventing the development of severe problem behavior in young children with autism. She began her career as a teaching assistant in a specialized school for students with developmental disabilities and eventually served as a school-based special education teacher, BCBA, and curriculum supervisor. She has also implemented and supervised in-home ABA programming, taught courses as a faculty fellow at Western New England University, served as the Associate Director of Dr. Hanley’s Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University, and served as a BCBA at an inpatient hospital program for children with severe problem behavior.
