In this article review, Catherine Jessel begins by interviewing Dr. Adithyan Rajaraman, the lead author of “Mand Compliance as a Contingency Controlling Problem Behavior.” They discuss (a) the inspiration and motivation behind the article, (b) further recommended readings, and (c) Dr. Rajaraman’s experience conducting the literature review. Catherine then interviews Ed Sidley, an expert in the application of Skill-Based Treatment for severe problem behavior. They discuss (a) the prevalence of mand control in the functional analysis literature, (b) the synthesized contingencies built into mand compliance, and (c) the importance of future research into practitioner–learner interactions when identifying, analyzing, and treating challenging behavior sensitive to mand compliance. The key takeaway is that mand compliance is likely far more prevalent in practice than the literature suggests, and that practitioners should carefully analyze synthesized contingencies when mand compliance is suspected to influence problem behavior.
