All U.S. states now mandate that some insurance plans cover Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. These services may include interventions for severe problem behavior. Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) are compassionate, socially validated, and research-supported approaches to addressing these behaviors and can be integrated within insurance-funded ABA services.
In this course, three panelists discuss their experiences integrating PFA and SBT into insurance-funded services. They provide suggestions for aligning PFA and SBT with insurance funder requirements, including tips for reporting PFA results and writing goals related to SBT. Accompanying downloadable materials include sample goals with billing codes and sample report text. This session aims to equip practitioners with actionable knowledge for maximizing the benefits of PFA and SBT through insurance support, ultimately enhancing outcomes for service recipients.

Dr. Kara LaCroix is the co-founder of Seasons Behavioral Services in Wakefield, Massachusetts, providing school-, home-, and clinic-based ABA services. With over 11 years of experience in ABA, she has held roles ranging from behavior analyst to clinical director and agency founder. Dr. LaCroix has significant expertise in aligning treatment goals with insurance requirements and securing authorizations. She has published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and holds advanced degrees from Endicott College and Western New England University under Dr. Gregory Hanley.
Will Martin, BCBA
Will Martin is the Head of Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) Implementation at Soar Autism Center in Denver, Colorado, with over 14 years of experience in early intervention and autism therapy. Known for his work in naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs), he emphasizes collaborative programs involving caregivers for sustainable progress. Will’s knowledge in insurance-funded services ensures effective service delivery and positive client outcomes.

Colleen Whitaker is a dedicated BCBA with a decade of experience supporting insurance- and privately funded clients. Her expertise spans diverse age groups and settings, and she has been instrumental in training BCBAs and navigating insurance requirements to maintain service access for clients. Colleen’s collaborative work has strengthened relationships with insurance providers, facilitating efficient service authorization and compliance.
