The Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) are student-centered, compassionate approaches designed to address severe problem behavior in school settings. These processes align with federal and state assessment and treatment requirements for Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This course teaches participants how to integrate PFA and SBT into the IEP process, translate assessment outcomes into meaningful annual goals and objectives, and ensure compliance with accepted educational criteria. A detailed case review demonstrates the process from planning through IEP completion, including goal writing, client-specific modifications, and performance-based decision-making considerations.

Participants will be able to describe how Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) can be incorporated into IDEA-compliant IEP assessment processes, and describe and provide examples of scripted, IDEA-compliant IEP goals that incorporate Skill-Based Treatment.
The course consists of 8 chapters, each containing a video. Video progress is not saved if the browser is closed, so participants are advised to note timestamps before exiting. Short quizzes follow all chapters except the final one, and 100% accuracy is required to advance. Upon successful completion of all quizzes, participants must complete a feedback survey to receive a certificate code. This code grants access to a certificate worth 1 BACB general learning-type CEU. Participants are encouraged to review the “Download Materials” section before beginning the course.
Throughout the course, the acronym IEP is used to refer to an “Individualized Education Program,” consistent with terminology used by the U.S. Department of Education. The course acknowledges that some professionals use the term “Individualized Education Plan,” and both terms are treated as interchangeable for instructional purposes.
The course includes 8 chapters with varying video lengths and quiz requirements. Chapter video durations range from under one minute to over one hour. Quiz questions per chapter range from zero to three, with the final chapters containing no quiz questions.
