Abstract

The roles of implementors in functional assessment and treatment processes vary widely. In this training, implementors will gain a clear understanding of the values and priorities underlying the Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) processes, as well as their multiple roles in these processes. Through a combination of lecture, active responding, video models, and computer-based differential feedback, they will learn how to talk about and implement the PFA and SBT processes with diverse client populations. Implementors will learn specific skills such as setting up analyses, collecting and graphing data, how to bring the joy, progress an establishing operation, prompt a skill, differentially reinforce, respond to both mild and severe forms of problem behavior, and extend the skills to new evocative situations. They will also learn the more general skills of supporting and responding to parents and becoming an effective supervisee.

Objectives

An implementor will be able to…

  1. Describe why problem behavior occurs.
  2. Describe the difference between behavior modification, mollification, values-first ABA, and other ABA versions.
  3. Describe the priorities and key values within PFA/SBT.
  4. Describe their roles in the PFA and SBT processes.
  5. Describe the fundamental aspects of conducting an IISCA.
  6. Collect, graph, and interpret data from an IISCA and SBT implementation.
  7. Describe how integral implementation of IISCAs and SBT is evaluated.
  8. Describe the fundamental aspects of implementing SBT.
  9. Describe how to progress an EO, and how to prompt and differentially reinforce the skills of communication, toleration, and cooperation.
  10. Describe how to respond to both mild and severe problem behavior throughout the skill development process.
  11. Describe how to be responsive and supportive to parents.
  12. Describe how to be an effective supervisee.

Tips

  1. This course is divided into 16 chapters.
  2. Each chapter presents a video.
  3. If you close your browser before finishing a video, your place in the video will not be saved. Therefore, we recommend that you jot down the timestamp before closing your browser so you can quickly find the spot at which you left off when you return.
  4. After most videos there will be a short quiz.
  5. Many of the quiz questions are in the style of “multiple selection.” That is, there will often be more than one correct answer.
  6. Be sure to check your spelling when composing constructed answers.
  7. 100% correct responding is required before moving to the next chapter.
  8. When all quizzes are successfully completed, you will be presented with a certificate of completion worth 10 BACB learning-type CEUs (9 General, 1 Ethics) and a link to a feedback survey.
  9. Be sure to check out the “Download Materials” section before the first chapter. It is full of helpful resources for learning and implementing the PFA/SBT process.
