Article:

Abstract:

In this article review, Catherine Jessel begins by interviewing Dr. Adithyan Rajaraman, the lead author of “Mand Compliance as a Contingency Controlling Problem Behavior.” They discuss (a) the inspiration and motivation behind the article, (b) further recommended readings, and (c) the experience Dr. Rajaraman had while conducting the literature review. Catherine then interviews Ed Sidley, an expert in the application of Skill-Based Treatment for severe problem behavior. They discuss the specifics of (a) the prevalence of mand control in the functional analysis literature, (b) the synthesized contingencies built into mand compliance, and (c) the importance of future research into the interactions between practitioners and learners when identifying, analyzing, and treating challenging behavior sensitive to mand compliance. The take-home message is that mand compliance is likely far more prevalent in practice than the literature suggest and that it is important for practitioners to “play detective” when it comes to analyzing the synthesized contingencies when mand compliance is suspected as an important element that influences problem behavior.

Objective:

The participant will be able to describe the importance of screening for mand compliance when it is suspected as an important element that influences problem behavior.

Tips:

  1. This course is divided into 5 chapters.
  2. Each chapter presents a video.
  3. If you close your browser before finishing a video, your place in the video will not be saved. Therefore, we recommend that you jot down the timestamp before closing your browser so you can quickly find the spot at which you left off when you return.
  4. After most videos there will be a short quiz.
  5. Some of the quiz questions are in the style of “multiple selection.” That is, there will often be more than one correct answer.
  6. Be sure to check your spelling when composing constructed answers.
  7. 100% correct responding is required before moving to the next chapter.
  8. When all quizzes are successfully completed, you will be asked to complete a feedback survey. At the end of the survey, there will be a certificate code. It is important to copy this code so that it may be used to access your certificate.
  9. After entering your certificate code, you will be presented with a certificate worth 1 BACB learning-type CEUs (1 General, 0 Ethics, and 0 Supervision).
